A 10-year-old Maryland child on vacation in the Bahamas was bitten by a shark on Monday afternoon, according to police.

The attack occurred around 4 p.m. ET on Paradise Island, while the youngster was “participating in an expedition in a Shark Tank at a local resort,” according to a statement from the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

He was rushed to the hospital and is reported as stable.

Police Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings told NBC News on Tuesday that she was unable to explain what safeguards were in place during the “Shark Tank” mission.

“I am a police officer on the island, and I have never gone to the aquarium they are referring to. As for how it’s set up, you’ll have to speak with resort workers,” said Skippings, who declined to name the property.

The Atlantis Paradise Island purports to provide a snorkeling program in which guests can swim “alongside sleek sharks, spotted rays, and brilliantly colored tropical fish in this underwater setting.”

The resort did not immediately respond to a message left Tuesday afternoon.
