Chicago’s measles tally climbs to 52 as suburban Cook County confirms first case

Suburban Cook County has verified its first measles case of the year, while Chicago’s outbreak continues.

The Cook County Department of Public Health announced on Friday that the suburban resident was exposed to measles while staying at a migrant shelter in Chicago. The resident has recovered and is no longer contagious.

CCDPH is working to identify and notify anyone who may have been exposed.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Department of Public Health reported 52 confirmed cases of measles this year. The majority of the city’s cases are tied to the Pilsen migrant shelter on Halsted Street. Thirty-one of the 52 confirmed cases involve youngsters under the age of five.

Measles symptoms usually show 10 to 14 days after being exposed to the virus, according to experts.

Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, red or watery eyes, and tiny white patches on the inside lining of the cheeks.
