Deadly crime spree ends in Wisconsin; 3 killed, including teen

On Wednesday evening, April 10, three people were killed during a multi-state crime spree that spanned Iowa and Wisconsin.

It began in Dubuque County, Iowa, with the death of a woman at her home. Tana Poppe, 32, has been recognized by police.

Poppe had two children: a 13-year-old and a five-month-old.

A short time later, Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett said they received a report about 5:30 p.m. in the Town of Dunn from a male and female suspect who dropped off an infant, later identified as the 5-month-old, at a home there.

The accused were identified as Poppe’s 13-year-old daughter and Alexander C. Grunke, 38, of Middleton. During a chase throughout various jurisdictions, the two were firing bullets at officers.

Barrett claimed that their vehicle collided with spike strips and that both suspects fled to Albion.

When the car came to a stop, the 13-year-old girl rushed into the woods.

Grunke began firing at a nearby home before running inside to hide himself in the basement with a mother and two children. Deputies were able to get the family out safely.

Grunke was heard firing bullets from inside the residence, and negotiators attempted to reach him but he did not react, officials said. After several hours, he was discovered dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The 13-year-old girl was later discovered dead in the surrounding woods. It is unclear how she died.

No deputies were injured, nor was the 5-month-old.

The investigation is underway.
