According to unnamed law enforcement authorities cited by state news agency Tass on Monday, the Russian military has seized a British person who was fighting alongside Ukrainian troops in Russia’s partially occupied Kursk area.
Tass and other media outlets identified the individual as James Scott Rhys Anderson. According to Tass, he joined the International Legion of Ukraine, which was established early in Russia’s almost three-year-old conflict with its neighbor, after serving for four years as a signalman in the British army.
According to reports, Anderson was sent without his will to the Kursk region of Ukraine while working as an instructor for Ukrainian forces. A video of the man stating in English that he doesn’t want to stay here was released by Tass.
If confirmed, the report may be among the first cases of a Western national being taken on Russian soil while fighting for Ukraine, but it was not able to be independently verified.
Following allegations of a British man’s imprisonment, the U.K. Embassy in Moscow stated that authorities were assisting the man’s family, but it gave no other information.
Requests for response were not immediately answered by the Russian Defense Ministry.
Scott Anderson, the soldier’s father, told Britain’s Daily Mail that he had received word of the young man’s abduction via his son’s Ukrainian commander.
According to Scott Anderson, his son spent four years in the British military, temporarily worked as a police custody officer, and then traveled to Ukraine to fight. He claimed that after attempting to dissuade his son from enlisting in the Ukrainian military, he now worries about his safety.
My kid informed the newspaper that they torture their inmates, and I’m terrified that he will be tortured. I’m hoping he’ll be used as a bargaining chip.
After learning of a British man’s incarceration, the UK Foreign Office announced that it was assisting his family.
Shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested the creation of the International Legion for Defense of Ukraine.
The majority of the Legion’s members are foreign volunteers who serve in Ukraine’s ground forces. In addition to the Legion, Ukraine also hires foreigners to serve in squads, companies, and even battalions within its armed forces.
According to Ukrainian officials early in the conflict, more than 20,000 individuals from 52 nations traveled to Ukraine to assist in defending the country against Russian assault. The number of foreign combatants in the Ukrainian military has remained secret ever since.
According to Ukrainian sources, Russian soldiers launched several drones against Ukraine overnight.
Ivan Fedorov, the regional head, claimed that dozens of Shahed drones, manufactured in Iran, flew at and through the southeast city of Zaporizhzhia. The official said a 13-year-old was hurt when falling debris and drone explosions destroyed multiple residential homes in the city. Fedorov shared footage of the attack’s aftermath, which showed severely damaged homes with roofs punctured and windows blown out.
The regional government reported on Monday morning that although wreckage from intercepted drones fell in the city’s Darnytskyi area in the capital, Kyiv, no one was hurt.
According to regional head Vitalii Kim, the drones attacked energy infrastructure in the southern region of the country, the Mykolaiv, overnight, resulting in a brief power outage. According to Kim, most customers have already had their power restored by energy providers, and repairs are still being made. No one was hurt.
According to Mayor Ihor Terekhov, at least 19 people were hurt when the Russian military struck Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city in the northeast, on Monday morning. Terekhov claimed that a modified S-400 missile was used to launch the strike on a residential area with a high population density. The missile struck courtyards encircled by multi-story buildings. Vehicles and outbuildings caught fire.
