Bobby Mongelli, a restaurateur from the Florida Keys, created the Hogfish Bar & Grill in 2002. It’s a unique Keys-style establishment with a view of the water at Safe Harbour Marina on Stock Island. On Saturday, Nov. 30, fans of the landmark location may celebrate its 22nd anniversary with a free performance by legendary singer/songwriter Mac McAnally and other members of Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefers Band.
Since its opening, the thatch-roofed Hogfish has gained recognition for its complete bar and culinary items, as well as its lively clientele and laid-back old Keys vibe. Over the years, notable guests have included Congressmen and Senators, celebrity chefs, artist Jimmy Buffett and his fellow musicians, and a group of folks Mongelli describes as cool from all over the world.
Howard Livingston, the Keys troubadour, and his Mile Marker 24 Band will perform during the anniversary celebration, which begins at 5 p.m.
There will be three performances by the late Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band. All have a long history together and are well-known for their separate musical endeavors. They are chart-topping songwriter and performer Scotty Emerick; composer and drummer Eric Darken; and singer, songwriter, and guitarist McAnally.
The Hogfish, which is situated at 6810 Front St., is part of a lively heritage area of Stock Island. According to local legend, Safe Harbour served as a staging ground for the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, and a ferry that formerly ran between Key West and Havana sailed from a port across from the bar. The Hogfish honors that history today while bringing its own taste to the region.
“People say they love it because they can sit and relax and feel like they’re part of the community or feel like a local,” Mongelli said of the historic, operational waterfront blue-collar tavern and eatery.
The anniversary concert and festivities are free of charge.
