California’s Minimum Wage Boosts in 2025: Impact on Workers and Businesses

While the state’s minimum wage already sits well above the federal minimum of $7.25 per hour, workers will see an additional bump starting January 1, 2025.

How Much Will the Minimum Wage Increase?

On January 1, 2025, California’s minimum wage will rise to $16.50 per hour. This increase follows the current law, which links the annual wage hike to either 3.5% or the rate of change in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W)—whichever is lower. For 2025, the CPI-W comparison showed a change of 3.18%, thus determining the $16.50 rate.

Although voters had the opportunity to approve a higher minimum wage of $18 per hour last November, they ultimately decided against it. As a result, the wage increase will proceed as outlined by the state’s existing law, based on CPI-W data.

What About Other Sectors and Local Rates?

The increase in California’s minimum wage will apply to most workers across the state. However, certain industries have different rates. For example, fast-food workers in California saw their minimum wage raised to $20 per hour in April 2024.

Additionally, cities and counties within California may have their own wage laws that set rates higher than the statewide minimum. These local wage ordinances provide additional protections and pay increases for workers in specific areas.

California isn’t the only state to increase wages in 2025. Over 20 other states are also scheduled to raise their minimum wage on January 1, 2025, including Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, New Jersey, and New York. These increases reflect a broader trend of raising the minimum wage to combat inflation and ensure workers can meet the cost of living.
