Thedailymiaminews– At his sentencing on Monday, Emma Cooley, the mother of Sydney Palmer, Michael Edgington’s wife who was shot dead by him during a domestic argument in Kansas last year, blasted her disgraced son-in-law, telling him that “she loved you” and describing how he tortured Palmer’s family with degrading acts and remarks following her murder.
When Cooley first spoke with Edgington following Palmer’s passing, she remarked, “The first thing you asked me is for the PlayStation,” according to the local website Sumner NewsCow.
She put one of the video game systems on a bench near Edgington’s seat and said, “Well, here’s your PlayStation.”
According to authorities, on July 3, just before she died, Palmer, 25, got into a disagreement with Edgington and allegedly threw a 4.04-ounce concrete figurine at his head. According to the Sumner NewsCow, a responding officer stated in the incident record, “I could see he had a bump on his forehead.”
In retaliation, Edgington used a 9 mm pistol to trick her into falling.
He was sentenced to 61 months in prison, or almost five years, for second-degree murder on Monday. He stated, “I understand I did something wrong.”
Judge William Mott of Sumner County District Court granted Edgington the maximum punishment permitted and 36 months of probation after Edgington informed him, “But I don’t feel I am a threat to society.” Additionally, Edgington will no longer be allowed to own firearms.
In addition to requesting his PlayStation, Edgington apparently decided to remarry Palmer at the home he lived with Palmer, with the wedding ceremony taking place there, which infuriated Palmer’s family.
“You killed your ex-wife and my daughter here,” Cooley informed him on Monday. “And, as though she hadn’t been real, you have a wedding there.”
Furthermore, according to Cooley, Edgington constantly assured Palmer’s relatives that he was defending himself and that Palmer was ultimately responsible for her demise.
“Sydney had manic episodes,” Edgington said in police interviews. She recently had her medicine (Vraylar) stopped by a doctor, and she became upset with him for failing to take out the trash. Then [Edgington] ordered her to stop smashing items inside the house. Then she threatened to hurl a concrete statue at me. “Stop,” I said. She slapped me in the head with it after throwing it at me.
Edgington also allegedly threw cigarettes and littered at the grave site, according to Cooley.
On Monday, Cooley told him, “She loved you.” She refused to acknowledge that you killed her, even as she gave law enforcement her final breath. She was constantly attempting to keep you safe.
