Don’t Miss Out! Tax Relief Deadline PUSHED to November 3rd

If you reside in West Virginia and were impacted by the severe storms, flooding and landslides that started on February 15, 2025, there’s some good news for you since the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) extended a tax deadline

The storms, with their high winds, flooding and road closures, left businesses and many families in a bind. Because of this, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey issued a state of emergency, and the federal government later followed by issuing a major disaster declaration to assist those affected

Now, the IRS has also chosen to offer taxpayers a break by granting taxpayers extra time for filing taxes, a welcome relief for taxpayers.

The tax relief provided by the IRS is for individuals and businesses within the disaster-stricken counties

For how long will the tax relief be available?

Extended deadlines include income tax filing, which would otherwise be due on April 15, 2025, as well as other quarterly estimated tax payments and payroll taxes

Above all, you will have until November 3, 2025 to file your returns and make payments without facing penalties.

Besides, if you failed to make payments between February 15, 2025 and March 3, 2025, do not panic. Penalties will be minimized if you pay before March 3, 2025.

Who is qualified for tax relief?

The IRS is granting this relief automatically to taxpayers who reside in the FEMA-designated areas and have their address on record with the IRS. If you relocated to one of these locations or have records in these counties but haven’t had your address changed, you should call the IRS Special Services toll-free number at 866-562-5227 for help.

Other types of assistance available

The IRS has allowed victims and businesses to claim losses that are not covered by insurance. There are special provisions for retirement plans, penalty-free withdrawals, because of the disaster.

You can get help with your tax return if you need it for free through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) locations.

Food assistance

The Department of Agriculture said that West Virginia citizens are eligible to receive assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which will pay for food. It is predicted that around 3,000 households in four counties will be able to take advantage of this assistance.
