How major US stock indexes fared Wednesday, 11/20/2024

Although the slight movements for the indices concealed significant thrashing beneath the surface, U.S. stocks ended the day in a mixed finish.

After trading lower for the majority of the day, the S&P 500 closed Wednesday hardly altered. The Dow Jones Industrial Average managed a 0.3% rise while the Nasdaq composite fell 0.1%.

Following the retailer’s gloomy outlook for the holiday shopping season, Target led the market lower and lost over a fifth of its value.

On Wednesday:

At 5,917.11, the S&P 500 increased by 0.13 points, or less than 0.1%.

At 43,408.47, the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 139.53 points, or 0.3%.

At 18,966.14, the Nasdaq composite dropped 21.32 points, or 0.1%.

At 2,325.53, the Russell 2000 index of smaller businesses increased by 0.71 points, or less than 0.1%.

This week:

The S&P 500 is up 0.8%, or 46.49 points.

The Dow is down 0.1%, or 36.52 points.

The Nasdaq is up 1.5%, or 286.02 points.

The Russell 2000 is up 0.9%, or 21.70 points.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is up 24.1%, or 1,147.28 points.

The Dow is up 15.2%, or 5,718.93 points.

The Nasdaq is up 26.3%, or 3,954.79 points.

The Russell 2000 is up 14.7%, or 298.46 points.
