Gov. Kay Ivey declared a state of emergency for 25 Alabama counties on Sunday, as the state braces for winter storms this week.
Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Etowah, Fayette, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Morgan, Pickens, St. Clair, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston are among the counties included.
“We are anticipating unusually cold temperatures in Alabama this week, so I am urging everyone to be prepared, take caution traveling, and stay weather aware,” Ivey said in a statement.
Winter storm warnings and advisories will be issued for sections of north and central Alabama as early as tonight.
The National Weather Service predicts 2 to 6 inches of snow and ice in parts of northern Alabama tonight through Tuesday morning.
On Sunday afternoon, winter storm warnings were expanded to include all of north Alabama, including Huntsville, and more of central Alabama, including Birmingham, was added to winter weather advisories. More additions may be made in the future.
