Chicago police say 2-year-old gets deadly face wound after accidental gunfire

A 2-year-old boy died after apparently being shot in the face on Tuesday.

WLS reports that the event occurred soon before 8:20 p.m. on the city’s south side. Police were called to a home in the West Pullman neighborhood after receiving a report of a shooting.

When authorities arrived, they discovered the youngster, subsequently identified as Jamal Robindson, with an apparent gunshot wound to the face.

A 32-year-old relative at the scene told police she heard a loud noise before discovering the injured child, according to WBBM. Robindson was transported to a nearby children’s hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead less than an hour after the incident.

Police believe the gunshot was an accident. Police questioned the 32-year-old lady and found a handgun at the site.

“The important part about this is to find out where this weapon came from, why this weapon wasn’t secure, and whether or not this young man accidentally shot himself or someone had this gun in their hand and it discharged out of their hand,” Andrew Holmes, a neighborhood organizer, said in a statement to WLS.

An inquiry is ongoing, but no charges have been filed.
