Good news for homeless Arizonians: New bill would waive homeless people’s $12 driver’s license fees

The Arizona House Transportation Committee has passed legislation to waive driver’s license costs for those who are homeless.

House Bill 2143 would exclude people from paying the $12 licensing fee if they do not have a current address or live near a homeless shelter.

The bill is sponsored by David Cook, the chair of the House Transportation Committee.

“This is about solving the issue about getting people identified and in the system, getting them the ability to move on with their lives,” he went on to say.

Other Republicans on the committee were concerned about an amendment that would make non-operational IDs valid for eight years.

Cook claimed that this would place all documents on the same timeframe as travel ID renewals, but opponents say it could allow for voter fraud.

The bill is currently referred to the House Rules Committee.
