A pair of 3-year-old fraternal twins died after being discovered motionless in the back of a car early Friday morning in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
Police verified that they responded to an emergency medical distress call at around 2 a.m. EST for a car stopped northbound on Interstate 95 near Florida’s Turnpike extension.
Audio from a 911 call shows one person conducting CPR on one of the fraternal twins. Another call came in minutes later, reporting a second unconscious youngster.
“There was an unresponsive child, and shortly after that, another call was received that another juvenile was unresponsive,” Miami-Dade Police Detective Andre Martin told during an update at 7:30 a.m. EST.
Police have not stated what caused the children’s unconsciousness.
Both were transported to a neighboring hospital by ambulance but were later pronounced dead despite medical treatment.
As first responders arrived, a woman who had been in the vehicle jumped from the on-ramp railing, landing on railway lines below.
She was transported to a hospital in Aventura, Florida, where she remained in critical condition.
Police have not touched on her relationship with the children.
“Our detectives are still working to piece together this unfortunate tragedy. “There are many questions that they are working to answer,” Martin said on Friday.
Sections of the highway were closed for hours but have subsequently reopened.
