Man Charged in the Terrible Murder of 17-Year-Old Mother Found Strangled in Douglass Park

A man has been charged with the murder of a teenage mother found strangled on Chicago’s West Side, according to police.

Chiyenne Washington, 17, was discovered lifeless Saturday after reportedly being strangled in a first-floor apartment on the 1200 block of South Washtenaw Avenue in Douglass Park.

The 17-year-old was transported to nearby Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she eventually died. She left behind a one-year-old kid.

Micahel Cunningham, 18, was accused on Tuesday of the death of the adolescent mother. He was arrested on Sunday.

Cunningham is charged with one felony crime of murder in the first degree. He’s expected in court on Tuesday.

On Monday, Chiyenne Washington’s mother talked with ABC7, stating that she needed answers.

“It’s devastating because one day I’m going to have to eventually tell him [her son],” Bell went on to say.

Before the terrible discovery, Bell stated that her daughter was having arguments with someone who lived in the unit where she was later killed, according to authorities.

“I chatted with her about it. I responded, ‘I don’t believe it’s a good idea. I believe you should all end that. It’s toxic. You are still young. “You have your life ahead of you,” Bell added. “I’m sorry that I wasn’t there to protect you, and I couldn’t hold you and tell you, ‘I love you!'”
