Chicago was left reeling once more when another young life was tragically cut short in a mass shooting incident in late March 2024.
Arianna Murphy, a young adolescent with hopes of becoming a nurse, was fatally murdered during a party on the city’s West Side early on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024.
Arianna, described by her mother as kind-hearted and enthusiastic, was looking forward to starting nursing school in the summer of 2024.
However, her dreams were dashed when gunfire erupted at the gathering she attended.
According to Chicago police, the incident took place soon after 1 a.m. inside the business where Arianna and several other young women had congregated.
Arianna was fatally shot in the head during the mayhem, and medical responders pronounced her dead at the site.
Unfortunately, Arianna was not the only victim of the terrible assault. Several other people were hurt in the event, including a 17-year-old girl who was shot in the leg and two other teens, ages 16 and 19.
Arianna’s bereaved mother, Shatika Morgan, spoke to the Sun-Times newspaper about her daughter’s death.
Morgan described Arianna as her best friend, recalling their tight friendship and lamenting the early end to her daughter’s bright future.
“Arianna just wanted to go outside this weekend,” Morgan explained. “Arianna typically stays inside the house. She enjoys hosting game nights at home with her friends. She was not a partygoer.”
As the investigation into the shooting continues, Chicago police are requesting anyone with information about it to come forward and help find answers.
