Samsung Finally Launched First Revolutionary 5G Modem with Two-Way Satellite Communication

Samsung has officially introduced its Exynos 5400 5G modem. It is the same modem used in the Exynos models of the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. It will apparently be utilized in numerous next-generation Pixel smartphones, including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which will be released later this year.

The Exynos 5400 is a 4nm 5G modem that supports NTN networks and provides download speeds of up to 14.79Gbps.

The Exynos 5400 is Samsung’s first modem to support both NB-IoT NTN and NR NTN networks. This feature enables phones and tablets with this modem to have two-way satellite access for messaging even when there is no cellular network nearby. This feature allows phones to have the Emergency SOS capability. It can operate in both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G networks. It offers 4×4 MIMO in sub-6GHz and 2×2 MIMO in mmWave 5G networks.

It is also the fastest Exynos modem yet, with download rates of up to 14.79Gbps thanks to NR dual-connectivity for FR1 and FR2 bandwidths (3GPP Release 17). It is claimed to be a first-of-its-kind system capable of aggregating five carriers (3x 100MHz + 2x 40MHz) for a total potential download speed of up to 11.2Gbps using 1,024 QAM on the FR1 frequency range. Using FR1 is thought to be more efficient and dependable than using the FR2 frequency spectrum.

Samsung says that the Exynos 5400 is the most power-efficient 5G modem because it is built utilizing Samsung Foundry’s 4nm EUV technology. While the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ are expected to contain this modem, Samsung has not implemented its NTN connectivity functions in those phones, which lack two-way satellite connectivity for Emergency SOS and text messaging without a cellular network.
