In the State of California, a Growing Number of Idaho Residents Are Relocating!

The idea of Idahoans packing up for California might seem improbable, but recent data paints a different picture, revealing unexpected migration patterns.

In an era marked by widespread mobility and relocations, intriguing shifts are evident, particularly in the Boise area and the broader Treasure Valley. While the prevailing narrative often portrays Idahoans as hesitant to embrace California, the reality appears to diverge.

Contrary to expectations, the years 2019–2020 saw a decline in interstate migrations across the U.S. A report by Stacker indicates that only 9.3% of Americans relocated during this period, marking a historic low since migration data began being recorded in 1947 by the Census Bureau.

Despite this general trend, California has emerged as a notable destination for Idahoans seeking new horizons. Stacker’s analysis of the top 40 states where Idahoans relocate places California in the top 5, ranking fourth on the list.

Here’s a glimpse of the numbers concerning California:

  • In 2019, 4,372 Idaho residents relocated to California, accounting for 8.0% of all out-of-state moves. Conversely, California sent 17,722 residents to Idaho, making it the 11th most common origin state for newcomers.

Recent figures from Stacker highlight:

  • In 2022, 5,567 people from Idaho moved to California, comprising 7.89% of new residents relocating to another state.
  • Idaho residents ranked as the 23rd most common origin for individuals moving to California.

These statistics not only challenge conventional wisdom but also underscore a dynamic shift between Idaho and California.
