Officials Alert Residents to Recent Surge in Black Bear Encounters Across Rhode Island and Massachusetts!

Reports of black bear sightings have surged in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, prompting officials to issue a cautionary alert, particularly after an encounter on Sand Turn Road in South Kingstown this past Sunday evening.

Authorities advise against approaching or engaging with black bears if spotted. While these bears typically shy away from human contact, individuals encountering one outdoors should assertively make noise by clapping and speaking loudly while backing away slowly.

To deter bears from frequenting residential areas, residents are urged to remove potential food sources, such as pet food and bird feeders, and to secure trash cans.

In Massachusetts, sightings can be reported to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife at 508-389-6300 during office hours (Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm), or to the Mass Environmental Police at 800-632-8075 (available 24/7). In emergency situations, dial 911 for immediate assistance.
