Fatal Crash on Northern Boulevard: Husband and Wife Killed in Long Island Collision!

Syosset resident Sotirios Spanos, 33, admitted guilt in a tragic collision that claimed the lives of a husband and wife in Long Island, announced Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.

Spanos pleaded guilty to charges including aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter, assault, and driving while intoxicated.

Odalis and Ismenia Urena, aged 37, were traveling westbound on Northern Boulevard near Moores Hill Road in Laurel Hollow.

Spanos, operating an Acura MDX, was traveling eastbound on Northern Boulevard at an excessive speed while under the influence of alcohol. He veered into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with the Urenas’ vehicle and subsequently driving over it, as stated by DA Donnelly.

Data retrieved from Acura’s event recorder revealed that Spanos was traveling at approximately 100 miles per hour, just 2.5 seconds before impact. Despite attempts to brake 1.5 seconds prior, the collision occurred at a speed of around 84.5 miles per hour.

Tragically, Ismenia was pronounced deceased at the scene, while Odalis succumbed to injuries after being transported to Huntington Hospital.

Authorities reported that Spanos was found to be twice the legal alcohol limit over three hours post-collision.

Arrested by the Oyster Bay Cove Police Department and Nassau County Police Department’s Homicide Squad on the day of the incident, Spanos is scheduled for sentencing on June 17, facing a potential 7 to 21 years behind bars.

DA Donnelly expressed sympathy for the victims, highlighting the devastation caused by Spanos’ reckless actions, which resulted in the loss of a loving couple and left their two daughters without parents.
