Lexington, KY (DMN) – A former University of Kentucky student recently appeared in court and pleaded guilty to several charges, as reported by her attorney. The charges stemmed from a racist attack on a Black student, which had led to her ban from the campus.
A student desk clerk named Kylah Spring was subjected to physical assault and racial slurs by a 23-year-old individual named Sophia Rosing. At the time, Spring, who is Black, was working at the front desk of a residence hall.
The video capturing Rosing’s November 2022 attack and subsequent arrest quickly gained widespread attention, becoming a global news sensation.
Rosing has admitted to four counts of fourth-degree assault, one count of disorderly conduct, and one count of public intoxication, as confirmed by her attorney, Fred Peters.
According to Peters, she will be sentenced to 12 months in jail, 100 hours of community service, and a $25 fine. The plea of guilt was made right after a mediation session held on Monday morning.
Peters mentioned during the mediation that there were discussions, apologies, and a resolution was reached.
“Her life has been on hold for the past 18 to 20 months,” Peters told the Herald-Leader. “She has had a lot of time to think about what she has done, and she wrote a nice letter of apology.”
Rosing faced multiple charges, including public intoxication, assault of a police officer, assault, and disorderly conduct.
She was able to secure her release by posting a $10,000 bond the following evening. In February 2023, Rosing was indicted by a grand jury and subsequently entered a plea of not guilty.
According to Peters, her case has been passed on the docket five times since then, as both sides have been trying to find a resolution.
A docket pass is a mutually agreed upon decision by defense counsel and the commonwealth to postpone the proceedings to a later date.
Rosing, a white student, entered Boyd Hall and started provoking Spring with offensive language and derogatory remarks. According to the arrest report, Rosing continued to use offensive language, resisted arrest, and even bit a police officer after their arrival.
A video of the incident was recorded and circulated on social media, revealing Rosing’s intoxicated state as he repeatedly used racial slurs over 200 times within a span of 10 minutes. According to the police report, Rosing assaulted a police officer who had been called to the scene for assistance.
Rosing was banned from the university campus and chose to withdraw from the UK shortly after her arrest.
Rosing was promptly fired from her position at Dillard’s, as reported by the company. Additionally, her partnership with CollegeFashionista for social media influencing came to an end.
