NEW YORK – A 62-year-old woman is recovering after being pushed onto subway tracks during the Thursday morning commute in Brooklyn. Fortunately, she was not struck by a train.
The incident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. at the Jefferson Street station on the L train platform. According to police, a man in his 30s approached the woman and asked her for a lighter. When she did not respond, he allegedly pushed her onto the tracks. Quick-thinking bystanders helped pull her back onto the platform.
The woman was taken to a local hospital with a leg cut and swelling to her head. Police reported that the suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction.
Witnesses expressed concern over the incident, noting that while the station is typically calm, it has seen a rise in unruly behavior. “Once in a while, we see something. But most of the time, it’s calm,” one rider remarked. Another added, “I’ve always loved the L train, but lately it’s been pretty hectic.”
Authorities urge anyone with information about the attack to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip on their website.
As the city grapples with rising subway incidents, riders are reminded to stay vigilant. One commuter noted, “It still sucks that you have to take care of yourself. Be aware, and wonder where the resources are going.”
