ANDOVER TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – An early morning fire at a commercial structure in Andover Township is under investigation

On Nov. 4, at 4:00 a.m., Andover Township 911 received multiple reports of an active fire at 287 Newton-Sparta Road. Upon arrival, officers confirmed the presence of a working fire. Responding quickly, members of the Andover Township Fire Department were joined by automatic mutual aid from the Andover Borough, Newton, and Sparta Fire Departments, police said.

As the fire escalated, additional water tenders were requested from nearby communities, including Fredon, Lafayette, Hampton, Green, and Byram Township, to assist in controlling the blaze. The Andover Township Department of Public Works (DPW) utilized a backhoe to clear debris and access any remaining hot spots, police said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Andover Township Police Department, the Sussex County Fire Marshal, and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, police said.

Newton-Sparta Road was closed for approximately four hours to ensure the safety of emergency responders and the public during the active fire scene, police said.

The commercial structure involved housed a Mexican restaurant, and two new tenants were set to begin their businesses there in the near future. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, police said.
