New York State Attorney General Letitia James is warning New Yorkers of common health insurance scams that take place, especially as open enrollment begins.

New Yorkers have until Dec. 15 to enroll for health coverage that takes effect on Jan. 1, and scammers take advantage of this.

Scammers often use fear tactics, threatening people that their Medicaid or other health coverage is at risk of cancellation, or that they have already lost their coverage.

Other common techniques include: providing false offers of generosity to lure New Yorkers into providing personal information, or asking people for money to enroll in Obamacare.

New York agencies will never use the term Obamacare, or ask for money from consumers.
