After leading the Guardians to 92 victories and a division title in his first season as a captain at any level, Stephen Vogt of Cleveland was named the American League Manager of the Year on Tuesday.
The 40-year-old defeated AL Central opponents Matt Quatraro of Kansas City and A.J. Hinch of Detroit.
In the Baseball Writers Association of America’s balloting, Vogt garnered 27 of the 30 first-place votes. Hinch received one and Quatraro two.
In his debut season after taking Terry Francona’s place, Vogt guided the Guardians to a 92-69 record and the playoffs. Before falling to the Yankees in five games, the former major league catcher led Cleveland to the AL Championship Series.
In his second season with the team, 51-year-old Quatraro guided the Royals to the postseason the year after Kansas City finished with a 106-loss record (86-76), and then defeated Baltimore in a Wild Card Series.
In a four-game Division Series, Kansas City, powered by catcher Salvador Perez, lost to the Yankees at shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., a young star.
Despite losing key players like right-hander Jack Flaherty at the trade deadline, Hinch, 50, in his fourth season as the Tigers’ manager, also made the playoffs with a wild second half.
Later on Tuesday, the NL Manager of the Year award was scheduled to be revealed.
