NEW YORK (AP) — A man was fired at by New York City police in Queens on Tuesday night, striking one of them in the leg as they responded to complaints of armed robberies in the neighborhood, according to authorities.
According to officials, the shot officer should live.
Gary Worthy was recognized as the suspect by detective chief Joseph Kenny of the New York Police Department. He stated that two armed robberies of Queens businesses were the reason for the search for Worthy, 57.
The suspect started to flee and fired one shot at an officer, striking the officer in the thigh, after two cops tried to stop him in the Jamaica section of Queens. Worthy was killed when the cop retaliated.
According to Kenny, a 26-year-old lady was also wounded in the leg during the gunfight but is anticipated to live.
According to Kenny, Worthy had been on life parole for possessing guns and had been caught less than a week prior for allegedly possessing drugs and resisting arrest, but had since been freed. According to Kenny, he was also wanted for three other robberies that occurred earlier this year at gunpoint.
According to New York City Mayor Eric Adams, the city’s criminal justice system failed in its treatment of Worthy’s prior charges. Similar remarks were made by the Democratic mayor earlier this week following the arrest of a man who also had previous criminal records following a series of sporadic stabbings that left three people in Manhattan with serious injuries.
In addition to being thankful tonight, Adams stated, “We are also angry because we have seen in the last two days a criminal justice system that is failing New Yorkers and the good people of this city.”
