US Embassy in Kyiv shuts down after receiving warning of ‘significant’ Russian air attack

Ukraine’s KYIV (AP) The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv said that it would close as a precaution after receiving information of a possibly serious Russian air strike on Wednesday.

In a statement, the embassy advised U.S. citizens in Kyiv to be ready to seek shelter right away in the case of an air alert and advised staff to remain indoors.

The specificity of the warning was unique because Russian airstrikes have become almost everyday in Ukraine.

However, it comes a day after Moscow claimed that U.S.-made longer-range missiles, which U.S. President Joe Biden had approved, had been deployed in a Ukrainian attack that hit a munitions facility in the Bryansk region.

In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that NATO, the United States, and European nations would be at war with Russia if Western nations permitted Ukraine to use its longer-range missiles to strike deep inside Russia.

In that event, Putin stated, “we will be making appropriate decisions based on threats that will be posed to us, keeping in mind the change of the very essence of the conflict.”

As temperatures start to drop, Russia has recently increased the intensity of its airstrikes, conducting sophisticated combined drone and missile barrages this week to target energy facilities.
