Explosion rocks condominium in Detroit suburb, sparking fires and injuring 2

(AP) ORION TOWNSHIP, MI Authorities said two individuals were critically hurt after an explosion that may have been caused by a natural gas leak shook a condominium in the Detroit suburbs, destroying adjoining apartments and starting fires.

The explosion in the Oakland County township northwest of Detroit on Tuesday night left two persons critically injured and two others with moderate injuries, according to Orion Township Fire Chief Ryan Allen.

According to first reports following the explosion at around 6:30 p.m., Allen told reporters on the site that the reason of the explosion was still being investigated, but that it was likely caused by a gas leak.

According to Allen, the explosion of one condo building caused serious damage to another building and what seemed to be moderate damage to two or three other buildings at the complex.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office stated that a 72-year-old male and a 75-year-old woman were among the two individuals who suffered significant injuries.

At least 15 condo units at the Keatington New Town Association were evacuated, according to Orion Township Supervisor Chris Barnett, who told the newspaper. According to him, part of the condo that exploded was still standing, but the blast knocked out windows and caused one structure to slide off its foundation.

It appears to be from a motion picture. “We have a lot of homeless people,” Barnett stated.

Firefighters from nine neighboring agencies responded to the incident.

According to officials, two people who were missing after the explosion were later located and were not inside the building when it occurred, as reported by WXYZ-TV.
