Finnish authorities open probe into ruptured undersea cable between Finland and Germany

Finland’s Helsinki (AP) In addition to a Swedish inquiry into the potential sabotage of that link and another cable, Finnish officials announced on Wednesday that they had launched an investigation into the rupture of a data cable beneath the Baltic Sea.

The day after a cable that spans the Baltic between Lithuania and Sweden suffered similar damage, the C-Lion1 cable, which connects Finland and Germany, suffered damage on Monday. The accidents happened off the Swedish islands of Gotland and Oland, respectively. Although there is currently no evidence, Germany’s defense ministers stated on Tuesday that the damage seemed to have been caused by sabotage.

The C-Lion1 cable break prompted Finland’s National Bureau of inquiry to launch a criminal inquiry on suspicion of serious criminal mischief and aggravated interference with communications.

A preliminary inquiry into suspected sabotage in relation to the two cable breaches was launched by Swedish police on Tuesday. On Wednesday, they announced that prosecutors and Swedish police are also looking into a ship that was spotted at the areas in question.

They stated that the vessel is not presently in Swedish seas, but they did not provide any other information or identify it.

According to news accounts, the Yi Peng 3, a Chinese-flagged vessel, was in the region when the ruptures occurred, prompting the official investigations.

The 225-meter (738-foot) long bulk carrier was not moving Wednesday afternoon off the Danish coast in the Baltic Sea, according to vessel tracking data from the Marine Traffic website.

An email from The Associated Press seeking comment was not immediately answered by the Royal Danish Navy.
