In arrest records made public by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a Big Pine Key lady was imprisoned for reportedly drowning a puppy and requesting to bury it in her neighbor’s yard.
Animal abuse is a felony charge against 72-year-old Delaine Lowry.
Her arrest record states that on November 18, a neighbor on Palmetto Avenue called the sheriff’s office to say that Lowry had come to his house with a dead miniature schnauzer puppy and asked to bury the dog in his yard after she had just drowned it.
He informed the investigators that Lowry responded, “I’ll just throw it over the fence,” when the neighbor refused.
Lowry gave the two to three-pound, six to ten-month-old puppy to the deputies in a grocery bag when they got to her house, claiming she had to kill the dog because it was going to kill her. Later, she attempted to get it back from the deputies, claiming to be able to revive the dog.
Deputies discovered a five-gallon jar filled with soiled water with a damp patch of dirt surrounding its base after inspecting the property, which was messy, littered with trash, broken furniture, and overgrown trees and plants.
When asked if he knew his puppy was dead, Lowry’s husband James said that he didn’t know until Delaine informed him that there were police outside the house. According to him, Delaine didn’t say or do anything out of the ordinary that day.
Delaine Lowry was advertised as a Miami-based giant schnauzer breeder on an online Gooddog.com profile. Because she met and exceeded standards in the areas of responsible breeding techniques, the health of breeding dogs and puppies, and the environment and enrichment of puppies, the website designated her as a trusted Good Dog breeder.
According to the profile, “I raise all of my dogs with love in my home.”
Later, on November 20, at around noon, the profile was taken down from the website.
For a necropsy, the dead dog was brought to Cruz Animal Hospital on Ramrod Key. On November 19, Lowry was freed from custody after posting a $35,000 bond.
This case is quite upsetting. In a news release issued by the MCSO, Sheriff Rick Ramsay declared that animal abuse would not be accepted in our society. I would want to express my gratitude to the deputies for their prompt action and to our SPCA friends who helped with this issue.
On November 19, Lowery was arrested once more, this time for allegedly breaking into the Marathon SPCA building.
At at 5:26 p.m. last Tuesday, deputies arrived at the Florida Keys SPCA on Aviation Boulevard in reference to a break-in where a door had been forced open. Security footage that showed Lowry navigating a fence and using various methods to reach the property illegally helped identify him as the culprit right away. Employees of the SPCA said they knew Lowry and that she was trying to get back puppies that had been taken away from her after she was arrested on Monday for purposefully drowning one of them.
Deputies visited Lowry’s home. She was dressed just like she was in the security footage. They took her to jail. In addition to the previous charge of animal cruelty, she is now facing additional charges of burglary and criminal mischief.
