Without any prejudice, lionfish are tasty. They are a catastrophe for our marine ecosystem as well. Therefore, it’s a reason to celebrate when you can have a wonderful fish and double your impact by supporting a charity that rebuilds what they demolish.
A fundraiser for I.CARE will be held at Castaway Waterfront Restaurant and Sushi Bar on Sunday, November 24. By increasing awareness of the effects lionfish have on our reefs and I.CARE’s efforts to repair the same reefs, this collaborative objective will bring together efforts to promote a healthier reef.
The goal of the coral restoration group I.CARE is to engage the general public and recreational divers in restoration efforts. Weekly coral transplanting and maintenance dives are offered to local divers, with grant funding covering the cost of the dives.
Additionally, I.CARE organizes a Keyswide Trash Derby every year, bringing together land-based and diving participants to clear waste from the fragile ecosystems of the Florida Keys.
Between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., Castaway will support I.CARE’s efforts by donating $10 for each lionfish entry sold and $5 for each lionfish sandwich, lionfish taco, or King of the Jungle Roll cooked with—you guessed it—lionfish.
Kylie Smith, a Marathon resident and co-founder of I.CARE, expressed gratitude to the Castaway team for giving them a platform to raise awareness of the work being made to rehabilitate our reefs. Any chance to discuss our cause with residents and visitors excites me greatly, and I aim to inspire Marathon residents to take part in our initiatives. I’m eager to eat some of Castaway’s incredible concoctions.
Castaway’s buddy and business sponsor will match up to $3,000 of the money raised at the event. The goal of all the money is to foster a healthier reef.
