Ohtani again wins MVP and Japanese newspapers print more special editions to mark history

Tokyo (AP)On his own, Shohei Ohtanii will save the Japanese newspaper industry.

This time, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Japanese great took home his first MVP honor in the National League, marking his third MVP victory overall. He has already won two American League titles while playing for the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 and 2023.

Special versions of Japanese newspapers were printed in response to the prize, and they were distributed in central Tokyo on Friday morning. Japan is fourteen hours ahead of the U.S. east coast and New York.

While obtaining his copy, student Yoshio Inoue remarked, “Every year, Ohtani sets records that probably no one else can break.”

The special editions that are coveted as collector’s items were spurred by Ohtani and the Dodgers winning the World Series less than a month ago.

According to Yuko Shimamoto, “I was reading the newspaper and thought he’s amazing.” Having him represent Japan in MLB makes me very delighted.

The single-page editions, known as gogai in Japanese, are customarily used to commemorate important occasions and boost newspaper sales in Japan. Japan’s newspaper readership is declining, yet it is still higher than in many other nations.

Ohtani scored 420 points and all 30 votes for first place. Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte finished third with 229 points, followed by New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor in second place with 263.
