Giants release quarterback Daniel Jones just days after benching him

New Jersey’s East Rutherford (AP) New York’s Daniel Jones erain is finished.

Only a few days after the team announced that it was benching the Giants quarterback in favor of third-stringer Tommy DeVito, the team allowed him to be released on Friday.

In a statement, Giants president John Mara said, “Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him.” That would be best for him and the squad, we both agreed. Daniel has been an excellent spokesperson for our company; he is excellent in every aspect.

Mara went on to express his disappointment at the team’s relationship with Jones ending so quickly.

Mara went on to say, “We have a lot of respect and gratitude for Daniel.” We hope the future holds nothing but the best for him.

After being selected sixth overall in the 2019 draft, Jones, 27, told reporters Thursday that he gave the organization everything he had and that he still thinks he has a future in the NFL. When the Giants (2-8) made the playoffs once during his time as a starter, he considered himself responsible.

When then-coach Pat Shurmur benched two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, who was nearing the twilight of his career, early in his rookie season, the Duke product took over.

After the Giants resumed practice after a bye week and a 20–17 overtime loss to Carolina in Germany, coach Brian Daboll benched Jones on Monday.

Daboll hopes Tommy DeVito can ignite the squad when he starts Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jones gave a 90-second statement before fielding questions from reporters, saying, “I’m definitely not happy about it.” That’s not what you wanted to hear, is it? All those feelings you experience, then. But this is football at the end of the day. We work in an industry where results are required, and we weren’t meeting those expectations.
