NEW YORK (AP) President-elect Donald Trump will not be sentenced in his hush money case this month, a judge said Friday, instead establishing a timeline for prosecutors and his attorneys to further discuss their options.
The Nov. 26 sentencing date was already obvious due to the rush of filings in the case following Trump’s electoral victory this month. Without establishing a new one, Judge Juan M. Merchan’s order on Friday formalized that.
In light of Trump’s imminent return to the White House, he called for additional filing from both sides over the course of the next two and a half weeks.
The attorneys for Trump want the case to be dropped swiftly and completely. They claim that failing to do so will impede his duties and transition as president.
Although they don’t want the case to be dropped completely, prosecutors have stated that they are open to delaying it, possibly for as long as he is in office. Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has stated that the solution must strike a balance between the integrity of the jury verdict and the duties of the presidency.
Regarding Friday’s decision, Bragg’s office chose not to comment. Steven Cheung, the new White House communications director and Trump spokeswoman, praised it as a resounding victory for Trump.
Trump, a Republican, was found guilty in May of fabricating his financial records to conceal the true nature of a series of payments that gave porn star Stormy Daniels $130,000. In the final days of the 2016 presidential campaign, she was given it by Trump’s then-attorney.
She claims to have had a sexual experience with the married Trump ten years prior, and the payoff was intended to silence her about it. He claims he did nothing wrong and refutes her allegation.
