(AP) HANOVER, N.H. Two fraternity members and a Dartmouth College sorority are being charged in connection with the drowning death of a student who went to an off-campus party this summer.
Following the celebration, Won Jang, 20, of Middletown, Delaware, was reported missing in July. His body was discovered by state and local emergency personnel searching the Connecticut River.
Alpha Phi was charged on Friday with one count of aiding an underage alcohol house, according to police in Hanover, New Hampshire, the town where Dartmouth University located. Two Beta Alpha Omega members were accused of supplying alcohol to an under-21 individual.
Alpha Phi sorority hosted the party, and Beta Alpha Omega supplied the drinks. The majority of partygoers were younger than 21. According to authorities, a number of partygoers chose to swim in the river after the celebration. A strong downpour struck while at the river, and most people departed. Jang was abandoned when his family informed authorities that he was incapable of swimming.
Dartmouth suspended the fraternity and sorority at the time of the incident, and those suspensions are still in place. Jang belonged to the Beta Alpha Omega organization.
According to a statement from the campus, Dartmouth has long recognized the positive effects Greek organizations have on the student experience when they adhere to their declared principles. It is the duty of these groups, as well as of all Dartmouth students and community members, to maintain Dartmouth as a community that is inclusive, safe, courteous, and egalitarian for students, professors, and staff.
