St. Louis Blues fire Drew Bannister and hire Jim Montgomery as coach

Five days after the Boston Bruins fired 2022 Jack Adams Award winner Drew Bannister, the St. Louis Blues fired Bannister and replaced him with Jim Montgomery.

Doug Armstrong, the president and general manager, made the startling announcement on Sunday.

After taking over for Stanley Cup-winning coach Craig Berube after the previous season, Bannister had been in St. Louis for less than a year. In their first 22 games, the Blues have suffered 13 losses.

Between coaching Boston and Dallas, Montgomery worked as an assistant for Berube’s team in St. Louis for two seasons. Because of their poor start to the season, the Bruins fired him less than 25% of the way through.

Montgomery agreed to a five-year contract with the Blues.
