Edmunds: The longest-range EVs you can buy for under $50,000

Although they are becoming more and more popular, electric cars still only account for a small portion of all auto sales. In the US, EVs only hold a 6.8% market share after more than 20 years of infrastructure and vehicle development. Owners who suffer from range anxiety worry that they won’t be able to reach their destination on a full charge. However, that anxiety should subside as EV range rises and charging facilities become more widespread. Experts at Edmunds have put together a list of five of the best-range electric cars that cost less than $50,000 in order to assist. These cars are certain trims and setups that provide the most range at the lowest cost.

Manufacturer and EPA estimations are combined to provide the range ratings shown below. The independent EV range tests that Edmunds conducts are available on their website. Destination fees are included in the prices stated below.

Chevrolet Equinox EV 2025

The Equinox EV has a very low beginning price, making it both economical and useful. According to Chevy, it can travel 319 miles. Naturally, that is not an official EPA number, but it is the same as what the EPA projected for the 2024 Equinox with this powertrain. The primary distinction for 2025 is a far more affordable starting price for a car with marginally higher power and fewer features. Nevertheless, the Equinox is equipped with a number of useful driver assistance systems as standard, including rear parking sensors and automated emergency braking.

The cost of the Equinox LT FWD is $34,995.

Ford Mustang Mach-E 2024

Ford’s famously titled EV is reasonably practical thanks to its maximum 320-mile EPA range rating. The Mach-E is more fun to drive than many of its rivals, but it charges more slowly than other EVs in this price range. Its low ride height and hatchback design offer a useful compromise between an SUV and a sedan. Additionally, there are several powertrain options, such as a less expensive, shorter-range version and a more potent GT version. All things considered, the Mach-E is a stylish, entertaining, and practical EV for the money.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 2025

With an EPA-estimated range of up to 342 miles and a starting price of $44,000, the Ioniq 6 is an incredibly practical electric sedan. Compatibility with the newest quick-charging technology, which Hyundai claims enables it to charge from 10% to 80% in less than 18 minutes, contributes to its allure. Additionally, it takes less than seven hours to fully recharge its battery using a household charger. Hyundai’s charging claims were confirmed by Edmunds, although as usual, they depend on certain conditions. Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain guarantee is undeniably appealing, even though the Ioniq’s appearance may not be to everyone’s taste.

Cost of the Ioniq 6 SE RWD: $43,850

Tesla Model Y 2024

One of the first all-electric SUVs was the Tesla Model Y, which is now the industry standard for compact electric SUVs. According to EPA estimates, it has a 320-mile range. The Y’s functionality is also appealing to us. There is a front trunk, a convenient rear underfloor storage space, and good storage behind the second-row seats. Additionally, Tesla’s worldwide network of user-friendly Supercharger fast charging stations allows you to maximize the Model Y’s range when traveling by car.

Tesla Model 3 for 2024

For the 2024 model year, Tesla significantly upgraded its Model 3. According to Tesla, the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive model can go 363 miles between charges. That is more than enough miles to cover the demands of the majority of people. Additionally, the Model 3 has shown to be among the most energy-efficient EVs on the market, consuming less electricity per mile traveled than many of its rivals. Furthermore, range is just one of the three’s numerous advantages. It combines luxury and affordability in a radically modern form, accelerates swiftly, and handles nicely.

All of the EVs on this list have a range of over 300 miles, which is more than most people require. However, it’s also critical to remember that cold weather, rough terrain, and aggressive driving behaviors can all lower maximum range.
