Family of Columbia County man shot by police holds vigil

A memorial is being held on Saturday in honor of the family of a man who was shot and killed by police in Columbia County.

On September 11, Hillsdale resident James Dellea was shot by Saratoga County police. He led police on a low-speed pursuit from the Albany-Saratoga Speedway on Route 9 in Malta to the Bethel Saratoga Church parking lot while threatening to hurt himself. According to a report issued by the Attorney General’s Office, Dellea brandished a gun at troopers after defying orders to exit the vehicle, and an off-duty officer shot and killed him.

Copake Park will host the vigil at six o’clock.

Dellea drove stock cars in the area. In the past, his sister informed Dan Levy of NewsChannel 13 that he had lost both of his parents, two siblings, and his one-year-old grandchild, among other personal misfortunes, in the last three years.

NewsChannel 13’s Zach Richter will be present at the vigil and is in communication with the family. He will provide you with online and on-air updates.
