AP’s San Francisco The trial of a tech consultant in the 2023 stabbing death of Cash App founder Bob Lee in San Francisco will start with closing arguments on Monday. The incident stunned the larger tech world, as members lamented the loss of an entrepreneur they described as friendly and personable.
After a fight over Lee’s treatment of Momeni’s sister, Khazar Momeni, whom Lee was friends with, Nima Momeni stabbed Lee three times, according to San Francisco authorities.
In the early hours of April 4, 2023, Momeni had to use his Krav Maga martial arts abilities to ward off the paring knife Lee brandished after a poor joke. According to defense attorneys, Lee, 43, was on a multi-day cocaine and ketamine bender that left him furious and violent.
If found guilty, Momeni faces 26 years to life in prison. He entered a not guilty plea.
Family members of both individuals have experienced emotional strain as a result of the trial, which started on October 14. Lee’s father, brother, and ex-wife were seated on one side of the courtroom, while the defendant’s mother, Mahnaz Tayarani, was seated on the other.
According to Timothy Oliver Lee, Lee’s brother, it has been challenging to watch the surveillance footage of Bob laughing on his last night and the postmortem images of his injuries. He thought Momeni’s account of what happened was a lie.
He might have been drunk, but he was still Bob. He never acted violently. He claimed that he had always been a wonderful man and a teddy bear.
Around two in the morning, the two guys can be seen on surveillance footage exiting Khazar Momeni’s upscale condo and boarding Momeni’s BMW. They are then seen exiting the vehicle in a remote area of the city near the Bay Bridge, according to additional footage.
Momeni testified that Lee spilled the drink he was holding when he hit a pothole and halted his vehicle. He then joked, according to Momeni, that Lee should spend his final night in the city with his family rather than looking for a strip club to keep the party going.
According to Momeni, Lee then abruptly pulled out a knife. He claimed that Lee later left without displaying any symptoms of an injury.
In her occasionally rambling and controversial testimony, Momeni stated, “I was afraid for my life.” I have to protect myself.
At 2:30 a.m., Lee was discovered wobbling, pouring blood, screaming cries for assistance on an empty street in downtown San Francisco. Later, he passed away at a hospital.
After Lee introduced Khazar to a drug dealer who gave her GHB, a date-rape drug, hours prior to the stabbing, the prosecution claims Momeni became enraged with Lee. They claim that earlier in the evening, Momeni interrogated Lee about the possible fate of his sister in the drug dealer’s flat.
The jury was given the opportunity to ask questions, and through Judge Alexandra Gordon of the San Francisco Superior Court, one juror questioned why Momeni did not call the police after Lee was stabbed to death or after Lee was attacked with a knife.
Momeni’s DNA was found on the handle of a knife that was found in the vicinity of Lee’s stabbing, but the defense claimed that the handle ought to have been examined for Lee’s fingerprints.
As engineers and other executives wrote odes to Lee’s generosity and genius, the IT community was taken aback by his passing. When he passed away, he was the chief product officer of the cryptocurrency platform MobileCoin.
