The new police chief in Albany is already somewhat experienced in the position.
On Monday morning, Brendan Cox took the oath of office as interim police chief.
Prior to this, Cox worked for Albany Police for 22 years, including roughly a year and a half as chief.
Speaking about Cox, Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan stated, “He is a proven leader, both as a command officer and as a member of this community.” He has demonstrated his commitment to effective tactics that lessen community violence. In order to address the root causes of violence in our community, he is also committed to making sure that it gets the resources it needs.
It’s not that simple. I am aware that there are numerous obstacles. I am aware of our problems with hiring and retention. “I am aware that we have a violent problem,” Cox remarked. Together, we will address those issues and eventually keep our city a desirable place to live, work, visit, and enjoy for another four hundred years.
Eric Hawkins, who resigned after six years to accept a position in Michigan, is replaced by Cox.
Cox was chosen by Mayor Sheehan, who will depart at the end of 2025.
The person chosen to succeed her in the 2025 election will appoint a permanent replacement.
