NEW YORK (AP) Taylor Swift had the biggest opening week of 2024 and the best-selling book last week with just one retail chain.
Swift’s Eras Tour Book sold 814,000 copies over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to Circana. Around 85% of the print market is tracked by Circana, however the Eras figures are more accurate: Swift exclusively sold the book at Target, which on Black Friday introduced the Eras tie-in.
Despite Swift avoiding Amazon.com and other online stores and online complaints from some followers about typos and other mistakes in the book, sales skyrocketed. Requests for comment on Wednesday were not immediately answered by Swift and Target representatives.
The first volume of Barack Obama’s presidency memoirs is the only nonfiction book to have a greater debut than Eras, according to Circana, which excludes audio and e-book sales. Obama’s A Promised Land, which was distributed through all major venues, sold slightly more than 816,000 copies in 2020.
Swift has previously organized exclusive, unconventional releases. Instead of going via Hollywood studios, she collaborated directly with AMC Theatres and Cinemark Theatres for her 2023 Eras concert film. With over $200 million in box office receipts, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is the highest-grossing concert film ever.
