Trump names new point person for negotiating the release of hostages, detainees abroad

Washington (AP) At a time when the United States is working to obtain the release of captives in Gaza and other parts of the world, President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday appointed a health care executive to be the senior hostage negotiator for his administration.

The special presidential envoy for hostage problems will be Adam Boehler. Since 2020, Roger Carstens has served in that capacity. Carstens was selected by Trump and retained the position throughout the Biden administration.

Over that time, the United States has repatriated a number of Americans who were illegally jailed or held prisoner in Russia, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and WNBA player Brittney Griner, as well as Iran, China, Venezuela, and Afghanistan.

In addition to being the first CEO of the International Development Finance Corporation, Boehler is the founder and CEO of the healthcare investment business Rubicon Founders. Trump characterized Boehler as the principal negotiator on the Abraham Accords team, which aimed to secure wider Arab recognition for Israel, in a statement announcing the nomination.

Adam has engaged in negotiations with some of the most formidable individuals on the planet, such as the Taliban, but he is aware that, at least under President Trump’s leadership, no one is more formidable than the United States of America. Trump stated in a Truth Social post that “Adam will put in endless effort to bring our Great American Citizens HOME.”
