MARKED SAFE: HURRICANE FLAGS BURNED IN KEY WEST TO MARK END OF THE SEASON

To commemorate the official conclusion of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season on November 30, a group of residents of the Florida Keys lit and burned hurricane warning flags at Key West’s Truman Waterfront on Saturday using rum. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that 18 storms were named during the 2024 season. Helene, Milton, and Rafael were among the eleven that turned into hurricanes, bringing tropical storm-force winds to some areas of the Keys before making landfall elsewhere. Speakers at Saturday’s annual flag-burning celebration, which included blasts on a conch shell, paid tribute to people impacted by the 2024 hurricanes, and conveyed appreciation that the island chain was spared any major damage.
