WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is still dealing with the fall he suffered earlier this week, and his office reports that he will miss Thursday’s votes because of stiff legs.
McConnell injured his face and sprained his wrist after falling outside a Senate party luncheon on Tuesday. at the hours that followed, he went back to work at the Capitol, but his office announced on Thursday that he would be working from home due to stiffness in his leg after the incident.
The fall was the most recent in a string of health issues for McConnell, who will be leaving his position as leader at the end of the year. After collapsing in a downtown hotel in March 2023, he was hospitalized with a concussion and missed several weeks of work. Upon his return, he froze twice during that summer’s news conferences, looking blankly ahead before staff and colleagues helped him.
Additionally, in 2019, McConnell tripped and fell at his Kentucky home, breaking his shoulder and necessitating surgery. He suffered polio as a young boy, and he has long admitted that he has some trouble walking and ascending stairs as an adult.
Following over two decades as the leader of the Republican Party and forty years in the Senate, McConnell declared in March that he will leave his position at the end of the year. He will, however, continue to serve in the Senate and lead the Senate Rules Committee.
Sen. John Thune of South Dakota was chosen last month to lead the Senate when Republicans regain control in January.
