California DMV apologizes for license plate that some say mocks Oct. 7 attack on Israel

Los Angeles (AP) Regarding an offensive and unsettling customized truck license plate that the California Department of Motor Vehicles said featured hate speech connected to the October 7 attack on Israel, the government has issued an apology. However, a family member of the car’s owner claimed that the entire dispute was the result of a regrettable miscommunication.

The watchdog group StopAntisemitism shared a picture of a Tesla Cybertruck outside Los Angeles with the license plate LOLOCT7 on X. The acronym for “laugh out loud” is LOL.

According to the group, the plate appeared to allude to the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas militants, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people and an Israeli response against Palestinians in Gaza.

However, the truck’s owner’s son told ABC 7 in Los Angeles that the customized plate had nothing to do with the incident on October 7. According to him, it was a reference to the proprietor, a grandpa from the Philippines. According to the news station, LOLO stands for grandfather in Tagalog, CT for the Cybertruck, and 7 for the owner’s seven children.

“The DMV is taking swift action to recall these shocking plates, and we will immediately strengthen our internal review process to ensure such an egregious oversight never happens again,” the agency said in a statement released Thursday.

The license plate shouldn’t have cleared the review process, according to a DMV spokesman who told the Los Angeles Times. Many people who reported it to the department found it offensive after it was detected on social media.

According to the DMV statement, using abusive language is not only blatantly against our policies, but also against our basic beliefs of serving the public with pride and ensuring safe and hospitable roads.

Due to the phrase, the DMV stated that the owner of the license plate will be informed about the recall. The vehicle’s owner is entitled to challenge the department’s ruling.
