A 66-year-old Atlantic County man lost his life in a head-on crash involving three vehicles in Egg Harbor Township on Thursday evening.
The motorcyclist, Alfred Mottola 2nd, of Somers Point, was riding westbound on Longport Boulevard when his motorcycle crossed the center line and collided with an eastbound vehicle driven by a 17-year-old girl from Glassboro, police reported.
The accident occurred around 8 p.m. near the border of Somers Point, prompting an immediate response from emergency services. Tragically, Mottola was pronounced dead at the scene.
The teen involved in the crash suffered a minor injury but declined medical treatment, authorities said.
A third vehicle, also traveling westbound, was caught up in the collision. The two occupants of that car, a 63-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman from Marmora, were unharmed, according to police.
The crash led to significant disruption in the area, as Longport Boulevard—a key roadway connecting Somers Point and Longport—was closed for approximately five hours. Police conducted a detailed investigation during this time, and crews worked to clear the scene.
What Happened
Authorities say the crash began when Mottola’s motorcycle veered across the center line of the road. It then struck the teenager’s vehicle head-on. The impact caused damage to the other car traveling westbound, though its occupants escaped without injuries.
Investigators have not disclosed what might have caused Mottola to lose control of his motorcycle. No additional details about the road conditions or other factors have been released.
Community Impact
The fatal crash has left the Somers Point community in mourning. Mottola, a long-time resident, was known by many in the area.
Meanwhile, the 17-year-old involved is reportedly shaken by the accident. Her identity has not been released because she is a minor.
Residents in the area expressed sadness over the tragedy and concerns about safety on Longport Boulevard, a road many locals rely on for travel between Somers Point and Longport.
Roadway Closure
The crash shut down Longport Boulevard in both directions for several hours as investigators examined the scene and crews worked to remove debris.
Drivers were rerouted during the closure, creating delays for commuters and local traffic. The road was reopened early Friday morning.
Ongoing Investigation
Egg Harbor Township police are continuing to investigate the accident. Authorities have not yet determined if speed, distraction, or other factors played a role.
No charges have been filed, and police have not indicated whether any are expected.
Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact the Egg Harbor Township Police Department.
