BALTIMORE — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of Maryland, including Northern and Southern Baltimore, as well as Anne Arundel, Carroll, and Frederick Counties. The advisory will be in effect on Tuesday, December 24, from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Freezing rain is expected to affect the area during the morning, with ice accumulation predicted to be minimal—just a few hundredths of an inch. Some areas may also see a light dusting of snow.
Parts of Washington D.C. and northern Virginia are also under the advisory.
What to Expect
NWS officials say light freezing rain will likely begin early Tuesday morning along and west of US-15, spreading toward the I-95 corridor before sunrise. Areas along and north of I-70 are expected to see a mix of snow and freezing rain.
As the morning progresses, precipitation will shift to a mix of rain and freezing rain before tapering off early in the afternoon.
Drivers should be cautious, as the icy conditions are expected to make roads slippery during the morning commute. The NWS urges motorists to reduce their speed and be prepared for possible delays.
Recent Winter Weather
Maryland experienced its first snowfall of the season on November 22, though it didn’t result in any accumulation. On December 5, Western Maryland saw blizzard-like conditions, receiving between two and six inches of snow.
To prepare for winter weather, the Maryland Highway Administration has stocked 386,000 tons of rock salt, 1.6 million gallons of salt brine, and equipped 2,300 snow-fighting vehicles. The agency is also using road sensors and over 100 mobile weather sensors to monitor conditions in real time.
“We’re ready to jump into action whenever Mother Nature decides it’s time,” said Will Pines, Administrator of the State Highway Administration.
Cold Temperatures Continue
Baltimore has been under a Code Blue Extreme Cold Alert due to dangerously low temperatures. The alert, which lasted through Monday, December 23, was declared by the Baltimore City Health Department.
Residents seeking shelter can contact the Baltimore City Shelter Hotline at 443-984-9540.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has urged the public to prepare for freezing temperatures, particularly as holiday shopping continues.
Tips for Staying Safe and Warm
Experts recommend the following to stay warm and safe during the cold weather:
- Wear multiple layers of loose-fitting clothing.
- Cover your head with a hat or scarf when outdoors.
- Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol, which can cause dehydration.
- Walk carefully to avoid slipping on icy sidewalks or steps.
- Avoid using stoves, generators, or other unsafe heat sources inside your home.
With freezing rain and cold temperatures in the forecast, Maryland residents are encouraged to stay informed, drive safely, and take precautions to stay warm.
