City of Mexico — There was a drug lord named Ernesto “Don Neto” Fonseca Carrillo who was freed from jail late Wednesday after serving his 40-year sentence for the 1985 murder of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent.
Since he was moved from prison in 2016, Fonseca, 94, had been spending the rest of his sentence at home outside of Mexico City. The government agent, who asked to remain anonymous because they weren’t allowed to talk about the case in public, said that he was freed last weekend.
Fonseca was found guilty of kidnapping, torturing, and killing DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. He was one of the founders of the Guadalajara Cartel with Rafael Caro Quintero.
In February, Mexico sent 29 people from the drug gang to the United States. One of them was Caro Quintero, who was also found guilty of murder.
At first, it wasn’t clear if the US would also go after Fonseca.
In 1985, Fonseca was caught in Puerto Vallarta.
