According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, a tornado struck central Kentucky, killing one person and injuring at least 14.
Tornado warnings were issued in parts of the region as early as 5:20 a.m., according to WLWT Louisville affiliate WLKY. One was issued for Washington County about 6:47 a.m., when the storm intensified.
The Washington County Judge Executive stated that seven individuals were injured in addition to the tragedy. At least two residences have been damaged.
Washington County is located southwest of Lexington and is approximately two hours from Cincinnati.
The National Weather Service reported that the tornado was at least an EF-2, with winds of at least 115 mph. This comes just two weeks after another tornado hit southern Kentucky, killing 19 people.
Kentucky State Sen. Jimmy Higdon, who represents Washington County, issued a statement on Friday regarding the tragedy.
“I would want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all responding agencies and first responders who sprung into action without hesitation. Their efforts undoubtedly avoided more loss of life. “I’m especially grateful to the emergency personnel from surrounding counties who came to Washington County’s aid in its hour of need,” Higdon added.
