83-year-old Pedestrian Killed After Being Hit by Car in Walmart Parking Lot

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office says it is investigating an incident in which a pedestrian was struck and killed by a car in the Walmart parking lot in Petoskey on Sunday.

Deputies said they rushed to the location about noon after getting a complaint of a pedestrian being hit by a car.

Deputies identified the pedestrian as Donald Paul Mitas, 83, of Saginaw, Michigan, and sent him to McLaren Hospital for treatment.

According to the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, Mitas died on June 2, most likely as a result of his injuries.

Deputies said the driver, Erin Nichole Hay, 24, of Alanson, Michigan, was unharmed.

Sheriff Matt Leirstein noted that drugs and alcohol did not appear to be involved in the event.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the Mitas family during this difficult time,” Sheriff Leirstein stated.

The sheriff’s office stated that they are currently investigating.
