I-70 has been fully closed since 3:03 p.m. on Wednesday due to a multi-vehicle rollover collision.
The Colorado Department of Transportation said that eastbound I-70 at Silverthorne and westbound I-70 at the Eisenhower Tunnel were closed.
The Colorado Department of Transportation said that around 3:03 p.m., Colorado State Patrol officers responded to a multi-vehicle rollover crash on I-70 westbound near milepost 209.
According to officials, a semi-truck traveling westbound on I-70 collided with another, forcing both trucks to cross the eastbound lanes and roll over. According to witnesses, one of the semi trucks then collided with more automobiles. They did not say how many automobiles were struck.
Officials say three people were sent to a local hospital.
As of 5:17 p.m., officials reported that those semi trucks were still blocking the freeway, causing the full shutdown to continue. They say a detour is in effect, rerouting vehicles to Highway 6.
Officials said westbound I-70 will be stopped overnight as workmen fix around 1,500 feet of broken guardrail.
They stated cleanup on eastbound I-70 will take some time since a truck spilled glass products over the road.
According to CDOT, there is no expected time when the road will be reopened.
The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash; if you have any information, phone (970) 249-4392. Officials requested that callers offer their name and contact information so that an investigator may reach out.
